COLOR GUARD

Color Guard is a year-long performance group. Students develop technical ability and skills using flags, sabers, and rifles, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. During the fall season, the Color Guard performs with the El Modena Vanguard Band. Color Guard will prepare and perform routines for marching competitions, pep rallies, parades, and various community service opportunities. The Color Guard may compete as a winter or indoor guard at the discretion of the directors. Students wishing to participate in Winter Guard (Spring Semester) must attend all December workshops and audition for a spot on the team. During the spring season, the Winter Guard learns their own show and performs at indoor competitions. No experience is required to join the Color Guard. If you're looking for a fun activity and want to meet some new people, come check it out!

If enrolled in either Fall Color Guard or Spring Winter Guard, participation is required. Membership carries the following responsibilities:

  1. Attendance at all rehearsals, sectionals, clinics, and performances.

  2. Attendance at summer guard camp.

  3. Enrollment in Color Guard class during Fall Semester.

  4. Attend December workshops and Audition for Winter Guard (Spring Semester)

TEAM SELECTION

We believe in our coaches and their job is to manage and direct a specific sport. With this in mind, it is the coaches’ right and responsibility to evaluate and select students for teams, as well as determining the degree to which each student‐athlete will participate and they do this with considerable thought and sensitivity. During the selection process, coaches will evaluate skill level, athleticism, physical conditioning, positional play, trainability, punctuality, and various other attributes.

We want our student‐athletes to learn the value of being on a team and the contribution each must make. Team members have a responsibility to themselves, their teammates, and their coaches to learn and perform their role on the team. Teamwork requires the development of many interpersonal skills such as listening, following directions, accepting constructive criticism, being respectful, and supporting teammates and coaches. Student‐athletes have an obligation to participate in practice sessions with full commitment and enthusiasm. Orange Unified School District believes that at all levels—sixth grade through varsity—performance in competition is earned in practice and is not an entitlement. The coach is the only one in a position to make team selections and decisions.

PARTICIPATION

The critical role of a team member, at all times, is to enthusiastically and positively support the team and the individuals who are competing. Many high school sports are highly competitive and as a result, the amount of playing time in contests for an individual athlete cannot be guaranteed. There may be circumstances when a student-athlete will not get any playing time for multiple games or an entire season. However, all athletes are afforded practice time appropriate to their position and the needs of the team in order to allow the opportunity for personal improvement and growth.

Each coach will fairly and properly assess an athlete’s current skill level. At the time these assessments are made, student-athletes may not get equal playing time. Many factors determine an athlete’s playing time including but not limited to: performance at practice and in contests, skill level, attitude, behavior, effort, coachability, sportsmanship, the strengths and skills of the opponent, team dynamics, school academic and discipline issues, as well as attendance. In the event an athlete is concerned about his/her playing time, he/she should follow communication protocol to discuss with his/her coaches the necessary steps for improvement needed.
